Case: Skellefteå Kraft

A consultant from Omicold AB together with the measurement method's developer Percold AB was engaged to improve the electric power staff's winter capacity. The assignment included measurement of individual conditions, regarding cold sensitivity and hand function.

The goal was for the staff to become aware of the dangers and risks of daily work in cold climates. To increase the ability in emergencies by extending the endurance and to reduce and alleviate injuries, which increases the general safety for both the individual and the work team. The training "Perform in the cold" can be carried out close to production, with a minimum of production losses.

The staff needs the right knowledge about how the human body is affected in the cold, the right preparation for different situations and the right equipment. It is also important to know their individual conditions and those of the group.

The assignment included a number of “general lectures” for indoor staff as well as “in-depth lectures" including demonstration of personal protective clothing and protective equipment for outdoor personnel. Tests of individual circulation ability in the hands of outdoor staff have also been carried out. A total of 7 in-depth lectures and 3 general lectures were held in Skellefteå, Finnforsfallet, Arjeplog, Norsjö and Lycksele. The lectures and tests were conducted on 13 different occasions during the period January 24 to March 24. A total of 157 people participated in the lectures and 98 people conducted tests to assess individual cold sensitivity.

The tests gave a positive result, only a few had problems with reduced circulation. The tests were much appreciated. The test subjects received results in real time with an explanation of what controls the ability to circulate and how you can most effectively raise your hand temperature when cooling down.

The knowledge shows the way, provides a basis for improvements and provides a media interest. Something that benefits recruitment and makes Skellefteå Kraft perceived as an attractive workplace. The certification also provides support for managers at different levels to make the right decision.

The evaluation from the lectures showed that there is a great demand for more knowledge about how cold affects humans, how we should protect ourselves, become aware of risks that may arise and what form of materials and equipment should be chosen.

The results from the survey show that many people carry an injury picture on their hands, feet and face. Overall, 73% thought that the lecture was very good and that it met expectations or was even better than expected.
